Amazon unleashed a
scorched-earth policy in their ongoing war to destroy bricks and mortar
bookstores, like Village Books. Announcing unprecedented discounts--$4
to $5 below what WE pay for the books--the behemoth made clear that,
with predatory pricing, they intend to destroy everything in their path
to world domination of the book business.

Now, we can certainly
understand why you might be happy to pay much less for books, or
anything you buy for that matter. However, you also know that there's a
hidden cost in low prices--no more community bookstores (or other
locally-owned, independently operated businesses, as Amazon sells just
about everything these days), control by one entity of what will be
published--a serious attack on the heart of democracy, and the fact that
once companies have a monopoly they always raise prices.
We appreciate the support
you've shown for local businesses who support the cultural and economic
heart of this community. We hope you recognize this latest tactic by
this greed-crazed corporation as an attack on you and your community, as
much as it is an attack on local businesses. You can vote with your
dollars for what you want your community to be. You can also let Amazon
know what you think of their tactics.
Thanks once again for your
business. We hope we're here to serve you for a long time. It really
is up to you to help decide that.
