Chat Houses: At some conferences, it’s row upon row of rooms filled with more rows of folks in uncomfortable chairs. Not so here. At the Whidbey Island Writers Conference, private houses all over Whidbey Island will open up for intimate workshops on a wide variety of subjects. Whether you’re interested in writing for young adults; science fiction and fantasy; the business of publishing; or the many forms of storytelling, we have a chat house for you. And our instructors tag-team (two of them to each chat house session), so you can be sure of really good conversation and varying viewpoints from experts. Get comfortable, and get ready to feel like you really learned something.
Workshops: Our workshops aren’t limited to honing the craft of writing. They’re also meant to encourage you to look at writing as a key part of your life, and to encourage you to think outside the box when it comes to tried-and-true subject matters like craft, and the business of writing. This year, we’re proud to introduce a songwriting workshop, and a workshop on building your platform as a writer. Of course we’ll cover all the important craft aspects—writing more accurately about nature; controlling narrative distance; getting off your butt and just writing—but we’ll also tell you about building a solid web site for yourself, writing the perfect pitch, and making a living freelancing. One Last Thing: You know what happens: The conference is winding down, and suddenly, you remember that thing you meant to ask that writer, or that agent, before the session ended. But then! Crammed with knowledge, your brain lets the question go, and now you’re kicking yourself. Never you mind. We’ve set up the conference so there’s time for four casual Q&As, each tackling a distinct aspect of the writing life, on the very last day. Feel free to wander in and out of these, just so you can squeeze in that one. Last. Bit. Of information.
Of course, all of these sessions (and our workshops and critiques) will be lead and facilitated by our incredible 2013 faculty. Here’s just a sampling:
