Dee and I just attended our book group this evening and I've been reflecting on how much I enjoy it and what great perspectives I'm exposed to with each book we read. We joined three couples, each of whom had a four-year-old daughter, one year after they started the group. Those young ladies just graduated from high school and we've read and discussed more than a gross of books together in the intervening years. Tonight's discussion was about the book Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky and the conversation was, as always, far ranging and intriguing. The back story about the author--she wrote the book in 1941/1942 and died at Aushwitz--is as compelling as the novel itself. If you haven't read the book, you might want to pick it up.
If you don't belong to a book group I'd recommend getting together with a few folks and beginning one or finding one you might join. Churches, libraries and bookstores (including Village Books), among other organizations, often have groups open to the public. Nearly everyone we talk to about book groups lists, among the many benefits of such groups, the fact that they have read and enjoyed numerous books they would never have picked up on their own. Broaden your world, get into a book group.
